"Share Your Work Online: Building Your Legacy and Credibility"
Date:-Date:-25th February 2023
Dear Friend,
Hi! How are you doing? I assume you had a great week. See, I am trying to keep my promise of writing a letter to you every week, though I am three days late. A couple of days back, I was reading Satyajit Ray's book "Speaking of films" . It's a good book. I was revisiting it after a long time. While reading the book, I realized that our hobbies and work had the potential to keep us 'alive' forever. Here I am sitting with a book written by a man who passed away 31 years back, yet he has something to offer. Especially when we share our work with others, they become our legacy and immortalize us. That's exactly what I want to talk to you about today. "Always Share your work."
My mother was a teacher. She was very good at her job. Students always come to her and tell her how much of a positive influence she has had in their lives. She put a lot of effort into her job and tried to be caring and empathetic towards her students. But besides being a good teacher, she was also a great artist. She could draw and paint well, yet most of her work and merit have been confined to the four walls of the school she worked for and our house. She was always inclined to do something with her art, yet she never took the first step of sharing. Today, before she could take a step in that direction, she’s no more. Time has been cruel to her, never allowing her to take advantage of her merit and skill. If she shared her art, apart from her family, colleagues and students, the world would have also known about this side of her. Art could have been a part of her legacy, as she wished. However, it's never too late and I am still here. I would like to share her work and try to introduce this side of my mother to the world.
Speaking of sharing work - "Share your work" by Austin Kleon is a good book. I'll make a detailed video about the book soon, but for now, I'll share a few points for why I think we should share our work online apart from the fact that it becomes a part of our legacy, although I think that's a big sell. Sharing your work online consistently builds a small portfolio of your work, skill and ability. In today's world, no one is interested in what you write in your resume, people want to see what you have built with your hands. Sharing bits and pieces of your work and know-how gives you credibility.
Sharing your work online allows you to find an audience for your work. You find people who would appreciate your work in the large pool of people on the internet. If you share meaningful and valuable content, you will most likely find people who value your time and effort. Sharing your work regularly, apart from building an audience and credibility, it opens up opportunities for you in many ways. In ways unimaginable to you.Do share your interests and work online, whether about photography, programming, writing, filmmaking, traveling, Tech, or Finance if you are a Finance guy like me. Whatever your interests are or a combination of your interests. From now on, I hope you will take that first step and share your work online. With that, I conclude this week's letter. Hopefully, you will get the next letter by Thursday, until then. Bye !!
Yours lovingly
D.S.S.R.Anirudh
